2023: Cool Sites, Warm Year, Perfect Picking Dates
2023 was an exceptional vintage for the Willamette Valley, a warm, dry growing season free of hail, thunderstorms, and high humidity that spanned roughly 105 days. After a cool spring and slow start, summer heat spikes accelerated fruit maturity, while careful canopy management protected the vineyards from sunburn. Daily temperature swings from the low 80s down into the 50s, paired with late-afternoon Pacific breezes, created ideal conditions for a long, gradual ripening season that preserved naturally high acidity and concentrated flavors. A touch of September rain further extended the evolution of the fruit, resulting in outstanding quality at harvest. This vintage reaffirmed our commitment to sourcing from cool, high-elevation sites farmed by skilled teams, and after nearly a decade of tracking brix levels and bloom-to-harvest timelines across all of our plots, we picked with confidence at precisely the right moment, achieving the perfect balance of sugar ripeness, flavor development, and acidity that shows beautifully in the glass.
Freya Hermann Cuvée Chardonnay
Sourced from the windswept slopes of Eola-Amity Hills, the Freya Hermann Cuvée is the crown jewel of the 00 Wines Willamette Valley Chardonnay collection.
This wine is crafted from a single plot of organically farmed fruit grown on red volcanic Jory soil. The Freya Hermann Cuvée owes its length and power to meticulous barrel selection of rare tight grain new French oak made of staves aged to perfection for three years, as well as patient élevage, spending two years in the cellar. This gives the wine both depth and a silky yet architectural texture.
