ACCLAIM FOR 00 WINES

MANNIE BERK, PRESIDENT
THE RARE WINE CO.

I’VE BEEN IN THE WINE BUSINESS FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS.   AND ONLY A HANDFUL OF TIMES HAVE I COME ACROSS A PRODUCER NEW TO ME, WITH VERY LITTLE HISTORY, THAT I WOULD BET WILL HAVE A PROFOUND IMPACT ON HOW WE THINK ABOUT WHERE THE GREATEST WINES CAN COME FROM.   ONCE AGAIN IT'S HAPPENED, AND THIS TIME THE GAME-CHANGER IS CHRIS AND KATHRYN HERMANN’S 00 (DOUBLE-ZERO) WINES IN OREGON’S WILLAMETTE VALLEY.

A RIPE YET AGREEABLY COOL, AND AIRY NOSE IS COMPRISED BY NOTES OF GREEN APPLE, CITRUS ZEST, WET STONE AND DISCREET WOOD INFLUENCE. THERE IS VERY FINE INTENSITY TO THE POWERFUL AND TAUTLY MUSCULAR BIG- BODIED FLAVORS THAT DISPLAY EXCELLENT LENGTH ON THE WELL-DELINEATED, YOUTHFULLY AUSTERE AND SOLIDLY COMPLEX FINALE. THIS IS REALLY QUITE LOVELY AND A WINE THAT SHOULD BE APPROACHABLE YOUNG YET AMPLY REPAY EXTENDED CELLARING IF DESIRED.

PAUL GREGUTT, WINE CRITIC
WINE ENTHUSIAST

DOUBLE ZERO TAGS ITS TOP WINES WITH THE NAMES OF THE FOUNDERS' PARENTS. THIS IS THE BEST OF A STUNNINGLY GOOD LINEUP OF EIGHT CHARDONNAYS. PRODUCED AS A “BLACK” WINE (INTENTIONALLY OXIDIZED) WITH NATIVE YEASTS, IT WAS AGED 15 MONTHS IN A SINGLE FRENCH OAK PUNCHEON. THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS DETAILS RANGE FROM FLINTY MINERAL TO LAYERED LEMON-LIME, APPLES AND PEACHES, WITH LUSH STREAKS OF BUTTERSCOTCH, SALTWATER TAFFY AND EVEN A WHIFF OF PEANUT BUTTER. LET YOUR IMAGINATION SOAR—THERE IS SEEMINGLY NO END TO THIS SPLENDID BOTTLE.

IF YOU REALLY LIKE CHARDONNAY, YOU REALLY NEED TO TASTE THESE WINES.

00 WINES, A NEWER PROJECT FROM BURGUNDY-LOVERS CHRISTOPHER AND KATHRYN HERMANN, IS DEDICATED TO THE PRODUCTION OF SERIOUS, AGE-WORTHY CHARDONNAYS FROM THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY. THE PAIR, WITH CONSULTING WINEMAKER PIERRE MILLEMANN, HAVE A SERIOUS EYE FOR DETAIL THAT SHOWS THROUGH IN THE WINES. EVEN THIS “VILLAGES” LEVEL VGW, OR VERY GOOD WHITE, IS A STUNNER!

MERIDITH MAY, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
THE SOMM JOURNAL

A TRUE LUXURY, WITH AROMAS OF LEMON OIL, PINEAPPLE, AND SALTED MELON. FLORAL NOTES JOIN HONEY ON A PALATE SATURATED WITH LEMON-LIME, MAKING A DELICATE IMPRESSION ON THE TONGUE. A MELTED-CARAMEL EFFECT SURPASSES

EXPECTATIONS ON THE FINISH.

THERE IS CERTAINLY A STYLISTIC NOD TO THE WINES OF COCHE-DURY IN ALL OF CHRIS HERMANN’S CHARDONNAYS THAT I TASTED, BUT THIS IS THE MOST COCHE-LIKE OF THE CUVÉES THAT I HAD THE PLEASURE TO TRY FROM THE 2017 VINTAGE. IT IS A LOVELY WINE THAT WILL AGE LONG AND GRACEFULLY, BUT REMEMBER, IT DEMANDS HALF AN HOUR IN DECANTER IF ONE IS INCLINED TO DRINK IT NOW!

STUNNERS, WITHOUT QUESTION

CHARLES CURTIS, MW
DECANTER

THIS PROVOCATIVE WINE IS PRODUCED FROM GRAPES SOURCED FROM A VARIETY OF VINEYARDS, MOST IN EOLA-AMITY HILLS, USING THE OXIDATIVE ‘BLACK CHARDONNAY’ METHOD: FOOT-TREADING, EXTENDED SKIN CONTACT AND NO SO2 FOR THE MUST. THE RESULTS ARE DELICIOUS: THE LUSH, RIPE FRUIT COMES THROUGH CLEAR AS A BELL. THE TEXTURE IS DENSE AND COMPACT BUT NOT HEAVY, AND LINGERS IMPRESSIVELY ON THE FINISH.
